This movie by the national - award - winning documentary director Shabnam Virmani is a beautiful mesh wrought with folklore and Love. This documentary takes us to Eighteenth Century when the poignant and ecstatic verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai resonated through out Sindh. Having been inspired by this National Poet of Sindh, Shabnam Virmani and her crew attempted to animate the colossal body of Oral Tradition which formed a major part of Sindh poetic corpus. Shah Abdul Latif was a Sindhi Sufi Poet-Saint whose indulgence and close associations with  Sufis and Yogis from an early age ensued the spiritual outpour evident in his verses. His pious later life was also an outcome of the pre mature death of his wife. The profundity of his poetry became known to people by Oral utterances yet his disciples collected the works and published as "Shah Jo Risalo" in 1866. Latif brought forward the legacy of Sufi Poetry. Though he was believed to be an illiterate, the

This week I was determined to write about the film called 'Salaam Bombay'.But,right now I wish to tell you about something else.So let's save that film review for later.                                                 Before beginning the story, have you ever heard of a place called Olayambadi? I know that most of you are hearing it for the first time. Now you must be thinking then why I enquired about such a place right ? It's because that's where my house is located and since it is very far away from our college,I am staying as a paying guest. As many of you might know already,Fridays are really special for us hostelers because Yay! That's when we get to go home.On Fridays, usually I leave the college at 1:30 in the afternoon so that it won't be late when I get to home. But this Friday,I decided to leave the college at 4:00 PM after my classes are over.I believed that if I somehow managed to get to Pilathara before 7:00 PM,I will be able to catch th

SATYA SHODHAK: The Radical Mahatma-1

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, far from being a mediocre social reformer, was a dauntless revolutionary who brought the renaissance ideals to India. He became the harbinger of a progressive nation by advocating for girls' education which made him an outcast in his orthodox society. Instead of lip serving these novel yet insurgent principles, he dedicated his entire life and intellect in materializing these radical dreams. He was the guiding light who lead the oppressed ,including dalits, women and workers, towards progress. Phule, the thinker, made a break through in Indian polity by questioning the seemingly unimpeachable caste hierarchy which parasitized on Dalit lives. Having been influenced by western enlightenment thoughts, this visionary gleaned parallels between racism and casteism. He was the progenitor of the term 'dalit' which became the ideal expression to render the wretched state in which the untouchables live. Phule was the first ray of hope that

Friends!:) I admit, these days, I'm pretty irregular here and you might think that I'm dragging my heels! But No...I missed my readers and I know you missed your columnist as well. Why did I take such a long leave from our blog? The answer is precisely this...When exams come, they come not in single spies but in battalions (Pardon me for misquoting Shakespeare). Tests bring with them tons of anxiety, uncertainty and emotional strain especially in this pandemic era. Even an eager beaver experiences stress to a certain degree. Ofcouse, None has his or her ducks in a row all the time. What are we to do? Can we ever win over this seemingly invinsible adversary? Read on...      Stress is usually defined as a response of your body, to any abrupt and adverse situation. Hormones like cortisol and adrenalin also have their say in producing this mechanism. Consequently, you will experience exceeding blood pressure, palpitations and muscle strain. Yet, w

Dr.AMBEDKAR: An Inspiration to Multitudes

"LIFE SHOULD BE GREAT RATHER THAN LONG."- Dr. B.R. AMBEDKAR                      The glory that defied death...The roar that resonated along the horizon...The life that became synonymous with victory-Dr.B.R.Ambedkar. He, who made people agitate with his unrivaled zeal was the prime craftsman behind the Indian Constitution. It was his undaunted spirit and relentless effort that made a fissure in the hitherto impregnable Caste Pyramid. His fathomless erudition translated itself into various polemical and radical texts including Annihilation of Caste and Hindu Code Bill . The accolades for making India a secular, socialist and democratic Republic should reach this Visionary whose foresight is sans pareil. Ambedkar's life-long struggle was neither for power nor for wealth but for Liberation. "CASTE IS NOT A PHYSICAL OBJECT LIKE A WALL OF BRICKS OR A LINE OF BARBED WIRE WHICH PREVENTS THE HINDUS FROM CO-MINGLING AND WHICH HAS , THEREFORE, TO BE PULLED DOWN. C
