Janani's Juliet

Read the book ' nooru simhasanangal', and now watched the documentary Janani's Juliet. Though all of these are something published recently, they just have one thing to say.. Caste.. Caste.. Caste

India is a country which is known to be very cultural throughout the world. However the culture rooted deep in the country has various problems. We are a country that has a prevalent problem of casteism, a great social evil that needs to be done away. Furthermore, intercaste marriage is considered a taboo, and such acts has often given rise to honor killings.

The documentary ' Janani's Juliet ', says the story of the consequences faced by Shankar, a dalit guy and Kousalya, an upper-caste girl after getting married. Kousalya was a girl born and brought up in a very orthodox family. She was taught that love, was something evil, her parents even restricted her from having friends who belongs to lower caste communities. And so Kousalya was not able to live her life with her loved one. When her relatives came to know about her relationship with a lower caste guy, they fixed her wedding with someone else. The love of Kousalya for Shankar was so immense that she runs away with Shankar, hoping that she could live a life that she wished. But, she had a different fate.  Shankar was brutally killed by Kousalyas relatives. Even Kousalya was seriously injured. For Kousalya's parents it was not their daughters happiness that was worth but rather the purity of their caste.

I really don't know, what's happening all around us. I am startled, listening to the stories of honor killings over and over again.
Religions and castes are all in my opinion, manmade. And its quite alright to believe and follow them if you wish to do so. But above all we are human beings. So, haven't you felt like, humanity should be our guiding principle?. Its ok if you are not able to come out of your faith in caste, because thats all personal choices, and nobody else has got the right to interfere in that. But atleast lets not be a society without any social elements.

I really hate documentaries. But still, i had a good time watching Janani's Juliet, as the whole work has got a vibe in it, it do have some special elements too, that even if you are a person who knows the story of Shankar and Kousalya, you will be able to watch it without getting bored even for a minute.

Really an awesome piece of work.
